Once a month I like to feature different families of all sorts from around the world who love to travel. I’ve met some truly amazing families online that will really inspire you to get out there and explore the world. This month I’d like to introduce you to Pearce on Earth. I’ve been following Brandon and his family for a while now. His pictures are beautiful and his family and their philosophy is just delightful!
“Hi, I’m Brandon Pearce. For the past six years, I’ve traveled the world with my wife, Jennifer, and our three daughters, Emily (12), Marie (10), and Aysia (4).
After creating an online business, Music Teacher’s Helper, we decided to sell our house and all our “stuff”, homeschool our kids, and travel the world together as a catalyst for personal growth and new experiences. We’ve been documenting our adventures and what we’ve learned at PearceOnEarth.com ever since.
In the past 6 years, we’ve visited over 30 countries, starting with Costa Rica, where Aysia was born. Some of our favorite spots are Victoria (Canada), Ubud on the island of Bali (Indonesia), Barcelona (Spain), San Miguel de Allende (Mexico), and Japan.
Through our travels, we’ve volunteered at rescue centers and schools, experienced some of the earth’s most inspiring natural wonders, visited with people from all walks of life, attended retreats, conferences, classes, and camps, and dove deep into our own pasts and psyches to understand better who we are, what we believe, and how we can serve the world.
Traveling and living abroad has been an enriching and life-changing experience for our family. But it’s also been exhausting and humbling. We’ve enjoyed learning about other cultures and languages, and our minds have been opened and expanded through the new ideas, friends, and various challenges we’ve encountered. We’ve also grown closer together as a family and as individuals than we would have if we had just stayed home where everything was familiar.
We love having the freedom to support our kids as they pursue their own interests, educationally. Besides the rich education that travel offers, we all learn through life itself.
Our oldest (12) has a passion for music – she plays guitar and piano and writes her own songs, some of which she’s recorded and is getting ready to put on iTunes and her YouTube channel. For the past few months, she’s also been taking voice and songwriting lessons via Skype from a teacher in L.A. She has many other interests as well, including make-up artistry, art, and fitness. Our 10 year old is interested in magic, clowning, art, computer programming, and making people laugh.
All of our kids use technology extensively to learn, from searching for answers to their questions on Google or YouTube, to using websites like Khan Academy or StarFall, and iPad apps like Teach Me and Endless Reader to learn math and reading. We also try to take advantage of classes, museums, and workshops in the places we’re visiting.
We’ve got big plans in 2016 – including our first trip to Fiji and an Unschooling Retreat in New Zealand. Follow along at PearceOnEarth.com as we document our journey of living the life of our dreams. I hope it helps you to live yours.
