One Crazy Summer Roadtrip

One Crazy Summer Roadtrip

Before I get this blog up and running, I thought I should do a recap of our adventures for the past few months. In June we packed up our rented home in Washington DC, sold and gave away most of our belongings and stored a few treasures in a storage container. Seriously not even sure what is in there anymore!

One Crazy Summer Roadtrip

We planned a tentative road trip schedule, packed up several months worth of belongings into our minivan and hit the road! We are born west-coasters and although we have lived on the East Coast several times, haven’t had much of a chance to see the sights there. We decided to drive up to Maine and make our way down through New England all the way to Florida.

First Stop: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

We only stopped for a few hours to see where the Declaration of Independence was signed and grab a philly cheesesteak. The line to see the liberty bell was excruciatingly long, so we peeked at it through the back window.
Good parents right?

Second Stop: Bethel, Maine

Bethel, Maine is major ski town in western Maine that turns into a sleepy little river village in the summer. There are beautiful spots to kayak, take a dip in the Sunday River, hike and sight see all the foliage and covered bridges. We spent two weeks there and just enjoyed the outdoors, barbecued, played a lot of cards and relaxed. Bethel is a dream vacation if you just need to unwind and reset as a family.

So much amazing scenery in Maine! We went to Portland and took a day trip to Peaks Island. Absolutely amazing. Put it on your bucket list! Also, if you find yourself in Portland, go grab a dozen donuts at The Holy Donut! Worth the calories!

Third Stop: Boston, MA

I had been to Boston before, but this was the first time taking my family and it was so much fun! Since we are world schooling, I took advantage of all the history in Boston. We went to Salem and visited the country’s oldest candy company. Obviously an educational field trip! We took a walking history tour and went to the Boston Tea Party ships. If you go to Boston with kids, it’s worth the money! We had to take a trip to Harvard, so my kids could see where they are going to college some day and of course to use all those great Legally Blonde lines!

Fourth Stop: New York

We visited Palmyra in upstate New York, Niagara Falls and also New York City! We love New York City! It’s fairly easy to navigate with kids and there is so much to see and do and EAT! We were lucky enough to have our niece come alone with us for a few weeks this summer, so we even got a night out alone and the girls all went to see An American in Paris which is a fun musical! If you take kids to NYC, or even if you don’t, you must go to Alice’s Tea Cup! It’s such a joy to visit this place!

Fifth Stop: Washington D.C.

We had to come back to say goodbye to family and friends and hit up the American Girl store for Abbi’s birthday of course. I should never be allowed in that store alone! I need a chaperone! We stopped by Harpers Ferry, WV where my parents used to live and of course checked out cute houses, cupcakes and macarons in Georgetown.

Sixth Stop: Williamsburg, VA

I am in love with Williamsburg! It is the perfect combination of history, relaxation and family togetherness. Plus it is absolutely beautiful there. This was our second stay at the Powhatan Resort. We almost always stay at AirBNB’s, but make an exception for Williamsburg. The resort has 2 bedroom condos with enough room to sleep our whole crew, several great pools, a hot tub, a playground, a mini golf course, bike rentals and immaculate grounds with ponds you can fish in. I always find it hard to leave the resort to do anything else of educational value and some days we just stayed in!

Seventh Stop: South Carolina & Georgia

We just spent a quick day passing through these states. Charleston is an awesome city I hope to go back to and spend several days! I lived in Georgia for a summer as a girl on St. Simon’s Island. The traffic was so terrible going over the bridge so we had to skip that, but opted for Jekyll Island instead, which is an amazing vacation spot and not too crowded. We arrived on a rainy evening, but were able to see a turtle’s nest and frolic in the low tide! The old mansions on the island are a sight to behold!

Eighth Stop: Panama City Beach, Florida

If you’re into soft sand and warm water, this is the place for you! We spent a week here just being beach bums. The water and sand are equivalent to Hawaii without the shocking price of milk on the side.

The skies on the Gulf of Mexico are simply stunning. I wish I had taken my real camera out for these sunsets! We saw 2 dolphins playing under the pier one night. Simply magical!

One Crazy Summer Roadtrip

After all that fun, we drove to Dallas to visit family and drove on to San Francisco! Separate post on that later! It was a crazy summer, but we saw so much and had a blast! Our family grew closer together and we made memories that will last a lifetime.

The very heart of your writing while sounding reasonable at first, did not really settle perfectly with me personally after some time. Someplace within the paragraphs you managed to make me a believer unfortunately just for a short while. I nevertheless have a problem with your leaps in assumptions and one would do nicely to help fill in those breaks. In the event that you actually can accomplish that, I would certainly end up being impressed.

You really make it appear so easy along with your presentation but I find this matter to be actually something which I think I’d by no means understand. It seems too complicated and extremely broad for me. I am having a look ahead in your next submit, I?¦ll try to get the cling of it!
