Worldwide Family – Kestano Caravan

Once a month I like to feature different families of all sorts from around the world who love to travel. I’ve met some truly amazing families online that will really inspire you to get out there and explore the world. This month I’d like to introduce you to Kestano Caravan. I’ve followed the Kestano family from the beginning as they have 4 children (2 boys, 2 girls just like us) and are exploring a lot of Europe. They left the US around the same time we did so it’s been fun to see them go places we’ve been and I can’t wait to go places they’ve been. Hopefully our paths with cross at some point. I love nothing more than meeting my fellow kindred spirits in travel! Not only do I love following the Kestano’s travels, but their words and images are just beautiful and insightful.

“In June of 2015, we left our home in Colorado and set off on a trip of a lifetime – exploring Europe (and Morocco) in a caravan with our four kids. At first we thought a year would be a good amount of time, but after six months of travel we’ve decided to keep traveling and exploring indefinitely, until it feels time to go home. We’ve learned to keep our plans flexible and trust the flow of experiences and events in guiding us along this journey into the unknown.

We’ve always loved adventure and travel, and being able to share this passion with our kids and watch them explore and interact with the wide world around them on their own terms has been so fulfilling. They’ve proven to be adaptable to any situation or environment, whether it was Holland’s Storm of the Century that destroyed our caravan’s outdoor awning, or riding a camel for several hours and spending a cold night in a Berber camp in the Sahara Desert, or living day after day in the tiny cramped quarters of a house on wheels a fraction of the size of our home in the US.

While many people have told us they’d love to do what we’re doing, it’s also been very challenging at times. We’ve been constantly on the move without many of the comforts of home, and no sense of community since the longest relationships last only a few days. Our kids are at an age where they have a lot of needs and demands, and lose control of their emotions frequently (hopefully this phenomenon abates as they grow older!).

We’re looking forward to the first few months of 2016 when we’ll be settling down in a house on the French Riviera and the kids will be in a bilingual school. But all the effort, the bumps in the road, the meltdowns and tears, are totally worth the rewards of being fully out in the world, tasting, hearing, touching and seeing all the sights and sounds that delight our senses, and sharing it together as a family.

In the late Spring our plan is to pack up the caravan again and explore Scandinavia, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Croatia, and Eastern Europe. Beyond that is anyone’s guess, but we’re starting to tune into a rhythm of being in one place for half the year and traveling the other half. We’d love to take the kids to India, Japan, and Southeast Asia, and that still leaves huge pockets of the world to explore someday, including our home country of the US which we’ve explored only a bit of.

We’d love to continue to inspire and support other families to consider their own great journeys, so please get in touch with any questions or comments!”
