Family Friendly Hotel in the Swiss Alps

We had the privilege of staying at the beautiful Hotel Dorint Blumlisalp in Beatenberg, Switzerland which is a tiny town high up in the picturesque Swiss Alps.

We left our AirBnB in Basel after work on Friday and drove the windy road up to the hotel. We could hear the magical sound of cowbells all around us! We were greeted at the door by friendly staff and a teddy bear for each child to keep! We booked the hotel using our hotels.com points so our stay was free! European hotels are amazing because there are so many family friendly options.

In the U.S. we either need to rent 2 hotel rooms with our large crew or just book a house on AirBnB. We booked the family apartment which had a little kitchenette and living room on the bottom floor with pull out couch beds, which were more comfortable than some fancy hotel beds I’ve slept on. Upstairs there were two bedrooms and a bathroom (with a bath tub which is a big deal in Europe!). The master bedroom had the most beautiful view I have seen in my life: a full moon shining on snow covered Alps with crystal clear stars in the sky. I tried, but my camera just couldn’t do it justice. Since Beatenberg is above the fog line, the morning was bright and sunny every day. You can see the sea of fog below you covering Interlaken.

We had a comfortable sleep and awoke to a day full of activities. Breakfast at the Dorint was included and absolutely incredible! An enormous spread with all sorts of pastries, breads, fruits, yogurts, meats, cheeses, eggs, bacon, hot chocolate and more with friendly staff available to help. The concierge desk also helped us decide where to go and what to see. I’m always so grateful for good advice from the locals! They know what they are talking about!

When we left the Dorint we chose to take a short drive to a gondola ride up to Schilthorn where the James Bond movies, On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, was filmed back in the 60’s. It was an amazing ride up the mountain and the highest altitude we had ever been in our lives at 9740 feet/2970 meters up. I about had a heart attack as Paul went tramping around in the snow on the side of the mountain. ugh, just thinking about it now gives me the chills!

We headed back down the mountain and back to the Dorint. We were exhausted, probably from altitude sickness and just wanted to relax. We hit the indoor pool which had a big fountain feature and a hot tub and a sauna type thing that used light? I’m not really sure what it was, but it made me warm, so I enjoyed it! We all slept soundly in our own rooms with comfortable beds.

The next day after a huge breakfast (again!), we wanted a slower morning (to digest said breakfast) so we played at the kids club. You can schedule childcare there, but we were so busy that we only played there with the kids. They have tons of fun toys, games and even a piano!

Later that day we ventured to Aareschlucht, a beautiful glacial gorge with a railed walkway through it. Probably one of the most beautiful sights we’ve ever seen! Love that blue glacier water! There was also an amazing playground there!

We played in the kids club again and had a good night’s sleep with a beautiful view! We woke up and were so sad that it was time to leave this dream of a hotel. We had such a wonderful experience both with the Dorint and the area of Interlaken and I hope we’ll be able to go back soon!
