5 Tips for Worldschooling

These shoes from Keen were gifted to me, but we have been wearing Keen Footwear for years! All opinions are my own.

As the summer comes to an end and kids start heading indoors and back to school, the worldschoolers and homeschoolers of the world are settling down to start their school year as well. This might very well be the very best time of year for kids not in traditional school. The libraries, parks, and hiking trails are a little less crowded, but the weather is still nice enough to spend most of the day outside. As we begin a new academic year, I’ve compiled a few tips for worldschooling success that work for our family.

1. Be Outdoors as Much as Possible

“Never be within doors when you can rightly be without.” -Charlotte Mason

Even as the weather starts to cool down and the rains come, try to get outdoors as often as possible. It’s where so much natural, unforced learning happens.

Be sure to have proper outdoor gear for your adventures! We love Keen shoes for our summer sandals, but as the rains come we like to transition to the Hikeport and Fall Moxie styles. They keep little feet dry, are super comfortable, clean easy and can take a beating (absolutely essential for my kids).

2. Read, read, read!

Sometimes we have days where our regular schooling just isn’t working for us! When that happens, we pull out the books and read for fun!

3. Set a Rhythm

One wonderful thing about unconventional schooling is that you don’t have to be on a rigid schedule. You can have lazy days, or adventurous days out or whatever suits your family, but children thrive off having a rhythm to their days and knowing what will usually come next. It’s hard to find that balance, but I find that it really helps!

4. Let the Children Lead

There’s no better learning than when children choose what they want to learn! That doesn’t mean that you’ll be stuck learning about sharks or puppies for the rest of your life though. Practice the “art of strewing” by leaving books or items around the house that will spark your child’s interest. If you want to study art, leave paintings or books about artists throughout the house or if you want to learn about science, provide a microscope or items from nature for your child to explore. Their natural curiosities will be ignited and they will want to learn.

5. Take Time for Yourself

Don’t be too hard on yourself. Being responsible for your child’s education can be a heavy burden to bear, but we are all human. Be sure to take time out for yourself. Educate yourself on things that you are interested in and never stop your own learning. Your children will learn from your own good example!

I’ve never heard of Keen shoes before, but they look like they’d be perfect for my busy family. We’re also a family of 6. 🙂
